English 6 Lesson 30

My assessment for today was to choose another country and write about the interesting facts of that country. Think of the ways that Hans Brinker shows the culture of Holland. Describe the food, popular sports or entertainment, and interesting landmarks or buildings of the country that I choose. So I chose Italy.

Italy

Agriculture

Italy is the world’s largest wine producer and one of the leading in olive oil, fruits and vegetables. Quality goods in which Italy specialises particularly the already mentioned wines and regional cheeses.

Holiday

Public holidays celebrated in Italy included religious national and regional observances. Italy’s National Day the the Festa Della Repubblica (Republic Day) is celebrated on June second each year. Saint Lucy’s Day, which takes place on the thirteenth of December, is very popular among children in some Italy regions where she plays a role similar to Santa Claus.

Sport

The most popular sport in Italy is football. Italy’s national football team is one of the world’s most successful teams with four FIFA world cup victories. Other popular team sports in Italy include, basketball, volleyball, and rugby.

Music

From folk music to classical music has always played an important role in Italian culture. Instruments associated with classical music with classical music including the piano and violin were invented in Italy and many of the prevailing classical music forms, such as the symphony concerto and sonata.

Suspension Bridges

Irish immigrant, James Finley was born in 1756. He became involved in numerous roof building projects. He reviewed bridge design proposals. He used the knowledge of ancient bridges to design efficient models after years of experimenting built suspension bridges in 1801. His bridge spanned 70 feet. Suspension bridge: good strength to-weight ratio. Two main forces: compression and tension. Three loads: dead, live, dynamic. Finley published his patented design in a magazine, many others began using his design. His design spread to Britain through publications, the first suspension bridge in 1820. They spread to continental Europe.

Fire Hydrant

Frederick Graff invented the modern fire hydrant. He became friends with its design. He designed an iron “fire plug”. Fire hydrants provide convenient access to fire water. It supplies more water than old mathoods. The water starves a fire. It also cools the fuel. Hydrants can be color coded. Other towns installed hydrant neworks. The wet barrel designs froze in the winter. New designs were devised to overcome this limitation. The dry barrel design arrived by 1812. In 1812,  towns began installing dedicated fire water neworks.

Locomotive

Richrd Trevithick, was born in 1771 in England. Newcomen invented steam engines (1712) and Watt improved. He spent time observing steam engines in mines. In 1801, he built the first high pressure steam locomotive. The locomotive powers the train. Rail transport is energy efficient. The locomotives used fine-tube boilers. They vaporize water which drives the pistons that turn wheels. The steam also provided passenger heat and braking power. Trevihick’s puff devil broke. But on public demonstrations to publicize his locomotives. George Stephenson built a highly refined locomotive in 1814. He participated in locomotive trials for a new railroad company  in 1829.

English 6 Lesson 25

My Favorite time of the year

My assignment today was to tell a story about my favorite time of year. I’m not sure, I don’t really have a favorite time of the year, around in summer it’s super hot and I don’t feel like doing much, just staying inside where it’s cool. Now don’t get me wrong I love going outside but it’s so hot. I hate swimming, true be told I can’t swim. But I’m weird in a way that I think there’s something in the water or I’m just scared of drowning. I’m only scared of drowning when it comes to a pool when it comes to the beach. I’m scared of jellyfish and sharks.

I don’t care if there have been no attacks at the beach, I’m not going in! I remember one time when my mom made me stand close to the water and rolled over my feet. I was fine until a piece of seaweed had touched my foot. I screamed and ran away from the water thinking it was something else. I was only in kindergarten then, but still I’ve never really liked the beach after that. Well I’m not sure if I don’t like the beach I’ve never been back. I’m more of a land girl, not a water and an island girl. I do like the summer though, because the days are longer that way I can do multiple things as in, playing outside, then when it’s getting too hot I can go inside and read, once I’m cooled off I start to get restless, so then I go back outside.

I like October when it’s just starting to get cold but it’s still pretty hot during the day. I really like it because then we have our big family reunion, I have so much fun with all of my cousins. We usually get together on the second weekend of October. Which is right after my birthday. October 17th. I’m not much of a runner which is all my little cousins like to do. They’re not super little as in toddler little, but they’re little to me. They love to run but I don’t like to run because I don’t know why I don’t like to run. I just don’t unless the weather is cool and crisp then I can run for a while. I’m more of a walker. I can walk so fast that my cousins  sometimes have to jog to keep up. So what I’m trying to say here is that I don’t really have a favorite time of the year, I like the summer, I Like fall, I like Winter, I like them all because each one I’m doing something different.

For example, in the Fall (in the first week of October) we have our county fair. In the summer, (I’m not doing this in order but the way) I put the sprinkler under the trampoline. In autumn we are getting ready for the fair, gathering our cattle and getting ready to sell them. In Winter only it snows at least once (That’s the sad thing about New Mexico it doesn’t snow that much), so when it does, I make sure that I take pictures and gather some snow to make snow cream. Only this year it snowed in the third week of October.

English 6 Lesson 20

My assignment for today was to write a short story of my life ordered in chronological order, or, write a description of where I live in spatial order. I think that writing a description of where I live  would take a long time. (It’s not like I’m lazy or anything but I just think that it would take me a really long time) So I guess I’ll go with the first choice,

My name is Shayly Cummings, my parents are Cody and Kristy Cummings, I’m twelve years old, sometimes I’m told that I look and act nothing like a twelve year old, me and a friend were both told we look so much older than our actual age. I was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on October, 17, 2008. I don’t remember much when I was younger, just little bits and pieces, I don’t even know the order they are in. So I’m gonna just skip ahead to now. I’m in sixth grade, I’m the secretary and a member of the Winston Leggings 4-H club. I recently got the position of secretary for the 4-H council. I started showing animals at the Sierra County fair when I was in fourth grade, I show lambs, steers and horses. I rodeo, I ran for Hot Springs Rodeo Association Princess and I won the title, to tell you the truth I was NOT expecting that, at all. I thought I might get first attendant. I never expected to get the title!

I’m a bookworm, sometimes I wish I could live in whatever story world of the book I’m currently reading. If you get to personally know me then you’ll know that I’m a dork, I can be funny, I can be stubborn, and if you make me mad I can be pretty scary.  I recently watched Jurassic park. I’ve watched all three of the old ones, one of the newest ones, weather way I will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER look at birds the same way again, ever since I saw those Pterodactyls!

English 6 lesson 15

My assignment today was, write an essay about a vacation trip that I took this past summer. Or write about something else I did this summer.

Me and my family don’t do vacations only because we can’t spend much time at wherever we are, sure we my grandma can feed for us but we have certain rations for the show animals and we can’t let them be off those rations, my grandma does a good job, but it’s really complicated so we just tell her do one can, of whatever we are feeding them. This year was really crazy, with all of the whole COVID-19 thing. Anyway, I didn’t do much, because I was still doing school. I had started very late last year. Which led to me still doing school. But I did do some stuff, so here goes nothing, this year was full of Jackpots and Rodeos, honestly everything had blurred together, but I do remember some of the Jackpots and Rodeos.

So this one Jackpot we went to was pretty fun, it was a Jackpot in Artesia, that one SUPER FUN. I got to camp out, twice in the trailer, were we put the animals, but I got to sleep on this bed like thing, then next time my dad hung up my hammock, and the other two kids slept on the beds, the trailer we borrowed from a friend had a living quarters  area, and a area for the animals. Which us kids slept in while the adults slept in the living quarters area. The next thing is the  halloween rodeo, which was amazing! During the grand entry we had a costume competition, I dressed as Katniss Everdeen and I painted my horse with flames on him and I was Katniss Everdeen and her horse on fire! Everyone got a gift certificate to go get ice cream. And on Hallows Eve I worked the drive through  haunted house, and after the rodeo I worked it too. One time I got the bat with nails in the end of it, and I walked down one side the rode while the other kid took the other side he had an ax, the people would have their cars windows down, I would swing my bat around and sing in a creepy way

“La, la,la,” and when I got close I would follow the car and sing then say,

“La,la,la, who will be the first to go, la,la,la” The other kid I was working with ould be following the car, on the other side and he would yell,

“Get out! Get out!” We scared this one car full of people so bad I laughed afterwards, because the kid would yell his line, then I had said who would be the first to go, and there was a girl in the passenger seat and the guys in the driver’s seat was like,

“Take her! Take her!” Then when the kid yell get out again, the clown dropped for the tree and the driver cried out,

“I’m trying!” before that, the driver was already freaked, I think it was because of out butcher, she was really good, she had let her hair down, and it poofed up, she had blood painted on her face and she had a really big knife, and she would hit the meat, and she would say different lines for a different car, here are the one that I can remember,

“Come be my friend, play with me! PLAY WITH ME!” she would pretend to get mad, and yell and hit the meat harder,

“I love games. Want to play a game? You can be my puzzle I can cut you up and try to put you back together again”

“I’m gonna get you! DO YOU HEAR ME! I’m gonna get you!” She said everything in a really creepy voice which even creeped me out a little. So the Halloween parts were NOT from this summer but I didn’t do much this summer other than read Percy Jackson and do school.

English 6 lesson 10

My assignment was to write a book report on The Railway Children, Bobbie (the eldest) just had figured out what happened to their father, he was framed for being a spy for some other country and so he was put in jail, but Bobbie knew that their father didn’t do it. So told her mother that she knew and her mother told her not to tell the other children, (Peter the middle kid and Phyllis the youngest) Bobbie (also known as Roberta, but everyone else calls her Bobbie) promises not to tell the others.

One day the children are going up on the hills to watch some races, and have a picnic. There was this one person that they called the Hound In The Red Jersey, he was this older kid, whose name was Jim. While he was running in the tunnel he tripped over some wire, and hurt his leg, Peter and Phyllis went to go get help, while Bobbie stayed with Jim, once they got help they took him to The Three Chimneys (their house) and their mother helped him to bed. Bobbie went  to get the doctor, the children stayed downstairs while the doctor fixed Jim’s leg. Later the mother called Jim’s grandfather (who so happened to be the old gentleman) so also called Jim’s school teacher, and for reasons I do not understand she also sent them a letter, I’m guessing to let them know he’s ok.

Later in the story Bobbie had sent a letter to the old gentlemen asking him if he knew anything about their father. At the end of the story the father returns, now that they had caught the actual person who had committed a crime.

English 6 Lesson 5

My assignment for today was to write an essay on how I think The Railway Children should end. So let’s get down to business, So I guess I would want The Railway Children to end with the children finding their father, he was there at the beginning of the book but then he disappeared and I really want them to find their father. Right now it’s just the three kids and their mother and it would be nice if they could get their father back from wherever he is.

English 6 lesson 1

Today I just stared 6th grad English! I already have an assignment: Write one page on the topic of your choice. So I choose Percy Jackson.

Percy Jackson

I chose the topic to write about the book Percy Jackson, I chose this topic because this is one of my most favorite book series, there are at least three different series, I’m currently reading the second book from the second series and just like the first book I have mixed emotions first I’m mad then I happy then I’m mad again, because Percy is at Camp Jupiter, a Roman camp for demigods. Demigod: half god half mortal. Like I said it’s a Roman Camp. Percy is from a Greek Camp.  Camp Half Blood. He shows up with no memory, the only thing he remembers is Annabeth, his girlfriend. He doesn’t know who he is or where he came from, it annoys me. I wish I could just go into the story and put him back where he belongs. But that is not going to work, so I’m just going to have to keep reading and see what happens. But as always Rick Riordan has an amazing sense of humor, example,

He managed to swivel sideways to avoid breaking his legs, on impact. The snack platter skittered across the roof and sailed through the air. The platter went one way and Percy went the other. As he fell toward the highway, a horrible scenario flashed through his mind: his body smashing against an SUV’s windshield, some annoyed commuter trying to push him off with the wipers. Stupid sixteen-year-old kid falling from the sky! I’m late! – Percy- The heroes of Olympus- The Son of Neptune- Chapter 2- Page 14.

“Elections only happen in two ways,” Reyna said. “Either the legion raises someone on a shield after a major success on the battlefield- and we haven’t had any major battles- or we hold a ballot on the evening of June 24, the Feast of Fortuna. That’s in five days.”

Percy frowned. “You have a feast for tuna?”

Fortuna,” Hazel corrected. – Percy- The heroes of Olympus- The Son of Neptune- Chapter 3- Page 41.

As Hazel marched down the hill, she cursed in Latin. Percy didn’t understand all of it, but he got son of a gorgon, power-hungry snake, and a few choice suggestions about where Octavain could stick his knife. – Percy- The heroes of Olympus- The Son of Neptune- Chapter 4-Page 59.

“Can’t grow on this, can you?” she yelled. Go away, you bunch of weeds! Leave me alone!”

“Schist,” said an angry voice from the grass.

Hazel raised her eyebrows. “Excuse me?”

“Schist! Big pile of schist!”

A nun at St. Agnes Academy had once washed Hazel’s mouth with lye soap for saying something very similar, so she wasn’t sure how to respond. -Hazel- The heroes of Olympus- The Son of Neptune- Chapter- 19- Page -218.

“Thanks for yelling. We wouldn’t have found you otherwise. How’d you hold them off so long?”

She pointed to the rock. “A big pile of schist.”

“Excuse me?”

“Guys,” Frank called from the top of the rock. “You need to see this.”

Percy and Hazel climbed up to join him. As soon as Hazel saw what he was looking at, she inhaled sharply. “Percy, no light! Put up your sword!”

“Schist!” -Hazel- The heroes of Olympus- The Son of Neptune- Chapter- 20- Page -224.

History 4 lesson 170

Semaphore Telegraph

Claude Chappe was born in France in 1763, his uncle was a famous astronomer, he taught Claude how to use telescopes. The Chappe brothers designed a visual telegraph for use in wartime in France. The frost semaphore towers were ready in 1792. Semaphore telegraph visual symbols. They were read by messengers using telescopes. Messages could travel 286 miles per hour. France used the system to descend against their enemies. They were extended all over the country. Great Britain followed behind them, so did Portugal. In North America, they used it for commerce information.

Cotton Gin

Cultures tired easily removing cotton seeds, Eli Whitney couldn’t afford to go to law school. He took a tutoring job in South Carolina in 1792. Mrs. Greene persuaded him to visit her plantation in Georgia. He invented the cotton gin after listening to talk about seed extraction. Cotton gin separates seeds from the fiber. It squeezes them out. It sped up cotton processing approximately 20 times. The price of cotton dropped. Whitney couldn’t enforce his patent. Cotton production went through the roof. Southern towns grew into large important cities.

Eli Whithey

Whithey was born in 1765 in massachus He grew bored with the routine farm work. HIs dad let him set up a metal shop. He went to yale for college. His money ran out so he couldn’t afford law school. Whitney became an inventor. He invented the cotton gin. He popularized interchangeable parts in 1798. The US government contracted him to build muskets. Whitney almost went broke defending his cotton gin patent. He put on a sales show for the president. He opened his factory to visitors: no more patents. Local craftsmen came to gain ideas. He also had influential local contoots. Whitney produced the success of Samuel Colt. The Texas Revolution occurred in 1836. The Texas Rangers bought thouthands of revolvers from Colt. Colt used Whitney’s factory beginning around 1846 to build his guns. This led to the Cadillac and the “American system” of manufacturing.

                 Hydraulic Press

Joseph Braman was born in England in 1748. He opened his own carpentry business in London. And also installed toilets through the 17700s.  A lecture on locks captured his attention in 1784. Braman worked with Maudsly and invented the hydraulic press in 1795. Hydraulic press flatten metal. Pascal’s law amplifies in[ut force from level. Amplification is determined by the area of the two pistons. THe fluid doesn’t compress. It spread throughout the machine tool industry. Flax seed was turned into flaxseed oil. Edwin invented a new kind of press which became popular in oil factories in America.

I have nothing!

I think I have something to post……… nope I’ve got nothing! I would like to post something new, so you guys can see it but I have nothing, can you help a girl out and give me some ideas? Please?
