History 4 Lesson 165

Steamboat

Steamboat history begins with Denis Papin. Papin couldn’t convert the linear motion into rotational motion. William Henry in Pennsylvania put a watt engine on a boat. Which didn’t turn out too well, the boat sank. Henry business was initially successful thanks to mapopply powers.  The steamboat increased travel speed. They could now sail upstream. Boats were wooden, then steel.nmship degigh Steam engines powered paddlewheels. Fitch’s business failed because his monopoly ended. The idea lived on with Robert Fulton. Fulton made the industry commercially successful around 1809. Isambard Branel innervated steamship design. Competitors quickly imitated his success after 1839.

Robert Fulton

Robert Fulton was born in 1765. He started by becoming an accomplished painter in pennsylvania. Fulton moved to Europe in 1788. He developed inventions based on childhood encounters with west. After 1796, he made a reputation for himself as inventor. Fulton made steamboats commercially successful. The first steamboat was built in 1807. He also built submarines.f Fulton bult congress a warship for war with Britain. Fulton partnered with Robert Livingston. Livingston had gained a monopoly over steamboats in America.

Argand Lamp

Francois Argand was born in 1750 in Geneva. He picked up the mechanical abilities of his father. Studied with a famous swiss scientist.  He invented the first innovation in oil lamp technology in 1780. Argand lamp: much brighter than candles. The hollow wick is the secret. The glass tube steadies the flame. Reflectors focus the light. They required less maintenance and were cheaper than candles. Argand partnered with Matthew Boult in England. He also helped a friend who was inventing the hot air balloon in 1783. His friend, Quinquet “stole” his design and manufactured the lamps in France. Bculton and Watt struggled to keep up with demand. It became affordable to lower classes Spread because of no practical use.

Power Loom

Endmund Cartwright was born in 1743 he foresaw the need for a power loom. Weavers won’t be able to use all of the thread. People were skeptical, but Cartwright wasn’t deterred. He hired craftsmen to build his invention. Power loom weaves fabric using steam engines. Increased fabric quality. Improved worker efficiency. Increased output by 3.5 times. The invention’s potential inspired further development. The machine increased 100 times in 50 years. Most growth concentrated in Lancashire. That area was home to weaving families. A handful of families accumulated enough wealth to build factories.

What I learned from this class this year, What did I enjoy the most.

What I learned from this class this year was how to write an essay, and for what I enjoyed the most was reading the book Black Beauty. I love that book so much and what made it even better it had to do with horses! I LOVE horses!

Black Beauty

Black Beauty is a book by Anna Sewell, it is such a good book. For those of you who do not know that book I will tell you a little bit about it but not too much or else I will just spoil the story. This story is in Black Beauty’s point of view, he starts out when he was a foal. Then he goes to a bunch of different homes, he meets different horses, and it such a good book! There are several movies that people have made and I have only seen one, but I LOVE horses and I LOVE this book and the movies.

Here is a picture from one of the movies the black horse on the end is Black Beauty and the pony is well…. ok sorry I forgot his name, and then the sorrel mare’s name is Ginger.

If I could do one thing to make the world a better place, what would I do?

If I could do one thing to make the world a better place I would see that every kid has a show animal. (this might sound crazy but just keep reading and you’ll see why) Having a show animals teaches so many things like responsibility, finase, hard work, how to take care of different animals. It’s really fun and rewarding (you get money if you do well with your animal especially at jackpots). Let me give you an example of animals you could show. Steer, pigs, lambs, goats. And that’s it!

So of course I am sure all counties are different but you can show a horse but showing horses is not like showing a steer or a lamb. Showing horses is really fun though! There are some similar things but not all things are the same. Here’s my example of my morning when I have to show a horse v.s me showing my lambs or steer.

Showing horses- Get up early in the morning, eat breakfast, get dressed in clothes that you can wash your horse in. Pick out your show outfit of your choice. And the day before you should have loaded you wash supplies in the trailer. Load your horse in the trailer after you fed him or her. Drive to wherever you’re having the show. (this is usually at our rodeo arena) Unload your horse, get wash supplies you put in the trailer (water hose, sope, brush, mud boots,) find a spot where you can put your wash supplies. Wash your horse and wait for him to dry (just tie him to the trailer and he  will dry out in the sun before you show trust in me. Grab your show outfit and go into the trailer and change (if you don’t wanna do that then just use the bathrooms they have there but if they have no bathrooms then just change in the trailer). Your horse should be dry by then so everybody (while you were doing this other people were showing up) should be here doing the exact same thing. Anyway you grab your show halter ( show haters are fancier than regular ones. Now if you don’t have a show halter that’s fine we just borrow one from our friends). You wait till your class then you show and that is nothing to it. Now it’s a little more complicated when you show but I didn’t go into the details about that.

Showing lambs/steer- same thing you would have loaded everything in the trailer the day before. (our fair is stretched out into several days so…) Get up early in the morning fed animals (I usually do but sometimes dad does it for me… sometimes but other than that it’s up to me) anyway load up steer and lambs go to the fairgrounds. Unload the animals and find a spot to put them (put the sheep in  the sheep/lamb barn and steers in the steer barn) unload all the other stuff (show related stuff including the animals feed.) And wait till it’s the day where you show. Our fair dragged out  over several days, example: lamb, and another show animal on a certain day. You have to come back to the fair ground to feed. Basically you stay at the fairgrounds all day then you go home and take a shower then you come back the next day  you can feed and stay at the fairgrounds all day again. It’s the same thing until it’s your day to show!

So in conclusion showing animals is fun yet hard work and that’s what I would do if I had to do one thing to make the world a better place.

What is something that I would like to learn how to do.

So the thing that I would like to learn how to do is……….roping I know it might not sound that interesting but I finally have an interest in in I used to not really think much about it all I wanted to do is….do the other events like barrel racing, goat tying, pole bening, and flag race. Now I am not going to get into too much detail of all the events but those were the only ones I wanted to do but I now have a horse that will NOT buck with me or throw fits with me. I finally have an interest in it!

Here is some pics of calf ropers I thought some of you would like to see what I am talking about

So this building is not in my city because when you have to think about what is a cool billing in my city you’d have to think for a long time. Now there are some pretty cool buildings in my town but in my opinion this one building that is not in town is really cool. Anyway this building is a restaurant and it is so cool because when you go into the waiting room there are these big cages with trees planted in the middle and there are exotic birds they are sooooo beautiful.  And the building is an adobe. I love adobe buildings!

The name of the restaurant is La Posta. It’s location is Old Mesilla, New Mexico. Now here is a fun fact well not really fun fact but it depends on what you think. But when the restaurant was a bar Billy The Kid used to hang out there in my opinion that was pretty cool. So I guess I should move on to how good the food is. It’s really good the hamburgers there are AMAZING!!!! Since I have only been there once I do not know how good the rest of the food is but I love their hamburgers.
